OO Works Aspinall Class 27 0-6-0

New to the OO Works range of handmade ready-to-run ‘OO’ gauge locomotives is the London Midland & Scottish Railway (ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway) Aspinall Class 27 0-6-0.

Built at Horwich Works between 1889 and 1918, more than 380 were completed for use primarily on freight duties, although they were also used on passenger trains.

The first withdrawals began in the early 1930s, while the last survived until late 1962. One – 52322  (LMS 12322) – has been preserved.

For review, we received a ‘OO’ gauge model of preserved 12322 in LMS black. This veteran was built in late 1895, entering service early the following year. In BR days, the locomotive was allocated to Nuneaton, Wigan Springs Branch, Sutton Oak, Newton Heath and Lees Oldham. It was withdrawn in 1960 and purchased privately before being restored by apprentices at Horwich Works.

OO Works’ all-new model features a die-cast metal body, chassis and tender chassis, together with etched and turned metal parts providing significant weight to aid its haulage capabilities.
