Teenage modeller Ethan Williams builds Revell’s all-new 1/72 F-15E Strike Eagle in a stunning 75th anniversary livery.
Boeing’s – originally McDonnell Douglas – F-15E Strike Eagle is a two-seat ground-attack variant of the F-15 Eagle. Based initially on the tandem-seat F-15B airframe, notable differences include the provision of conformal fuel tanks (CFT), which provide tangential weapons carriage for a broad range of air-to-air and air-to-ground munitions (up to a maximum of six on each side). It was designed in response to a USAF requirement for an aircraft to replace the ageing F-111 and F-4 fleet, and to complement the existing early F-15 fighters; the programme was known as the Enhanced Tactical Fighter (later Dual-Role Fighter) and competed successfully against General Dynamics' single-engined F-16XL. Besides the CFTs, other noticeable additions to the standard Eagle airframes include the AN/AAQ-13 navigation and AN/AAQ-14 targeting pods as part of the LANTIRN (Low-Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infra-Red for Night) system. The latter pod has since been supplanted by the AN/AAQ-33 Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod.
