The classic – and only – 1/48 Liberator tooling ever produced returns in Revell packaging as a B-24D, as CHRIS CLIFFORD explains.
Many modellers of a certain age would agree that, for their time, Monogram’s 1/48 kits were superb. They hit the shelves before engraved panel lines became the norm and various bombers and fighters joined the firm’s catalogue. While Monogram is arguably most famous for its 1/48 ‘Century Series’ jets, its bombers delighted us too.
One of these vintage gems is now available again in Revell packaging… the B-24D Liberator (item 03831). While Monogram’s first iteration of ‘The Soldier’ – as it was known in World War Two – was released in 1976 and depicted the B-24J, it wasn’t until 1983 that the tooling was adapted to portray the ‘D’. However, it’s a (mostly) accurate replica with almost all the structural nuances of the D – but, as with most other Monogram toolings of the period, it features raised panel lines. More experienced modellers will have no trouble re-scribing these, but if you sit more in the novice category, you’ll doubtless be happy to ignore the raised lines (and possibly restore them in places via stretched sprue when obliterated by sanding of join seams).
