Eurofighter’s Typhoon is in service with several air arms, including the RAF, which – in a departure from its usual minimalist schemes – bedecked one airframe in 2021 with a stunning black/red/white/blue livery. The multirole design endured a convoluted design process, entering service several years late and replacing types such as the Boeing (formerly McDonnell Douglas) F-4 Phantom, Panavia Tornado, Mirage 2000, SAAB Draken and SEPECAT Jaguar. Early variants focused on the fighter/interceptor roles, but as the programme matured, ground-attack and reconnaissance functions were incorporated into the design.

Future improvements will include an electronic warfare capability, with the type acting as a suppression of enemy air defences platform. Initial sales centred around European nations, including the consortium nations of the UK, German, Italy and Spain, with subsequent exports to Austria, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
