Revolution Trains' 'OO' gauge FNA-D wagons

Modelling modern nuclear flask traffic has become more achievable recently with a steady stream of new releases. MARK CHIVERS takes a look at Revolution Trains’ latest ‘OO’ gauge FNA-D flask carrier.

Revolution Trains’ newly-tooled ‘OO’ gauge FNA-D nuclear flask carriers touched down in the Hornby Magazine office in early September.

Built by WH Davis at its Shirebrook works, the first examples of the new FNA-D nuclear flasks began to appear in 2014. As more new vehicles were added to the fleet between then and 2019 this hastened the decline of the existing FNA-Cs – these new flask carriers replacing the previous examples completely.

The nuclear flask carriers are used to transport spent fuel from Britain’s nuclear power stations to Sellafield in Cumbria, as well as irradiated fuel from decommissioned nuclear establishments at sites around the country. They are operated by Direct Rail Services (DRS) and usually double-headed or top-and-tailed with locomotives from the company’s fleet such as Class 68 diesels.
