Mike Grant unmasks a painting challenge, as he constructs SBS Model’s 1/72 PZL P.1 resin kit with an eye-catching livery.
For many years, Polish aircraft were often overlooked by kit manufacturers, but the ever-burgeoning eastern European hobby industry means these subjects are now receiving the representation they deserve. PZL’s P-series of fighters is one aircraft ‘family’ that would likely have been familiar to most modellers even before this renewed interest, due to older releases by Heller and Revell (among others). This lovely resin kit by Hungarian manufacturer SBS Model depicts the prototype P.1 version, which evolved into the familiar World War Two fighter.
Originally issued by Arma Hobby (prior to that company’s range of styrene P.11 offerings), the kit exhibits the same superb detail and engineering standards for which SBS has become known. Arriving in a sturdy little box, all parts were cast in light grey resin with no sign of any air bubbles, and even the casting blocks had been thoughtfully designed to minimise damage when the components were removed.
