Bulleid’s ‘Merchant Navy’
The Southern Railway’s ‘Merchant Navy’ locomotives were some of the best looking steam engines ever built and amongst the most technologically advanced too - but they had some features which proved troublesome in service, as EVAN GREEN-HUGHES relates.

Reality Check: The 4-BEP EMU
During the 1950s and 1960s the Southern Region massively extended its electrified network, and in doing so introduced a number of new classes of Electric Multiple Unit, with one of the least numerous of these being the 4-BEP which was designed to provide catering on services on the South Coast lines. Wartime black for Hornby ‘MN’
Arriving hot on the heels of BR lined blue ‘Merchant Navy’ 35024 East Asiatic Company (HM168) is 21C7 Aberdeen Commonwealth in the altogether more austere SR wartime black. It was announced as part of the Hornby 2019 range announcement.
