Fans of waterborne aircraft will welcome the return of Special Hobby’s 1/72 Sunderland Mk.V, as CHRIS CLIFFORD reports.
Special Hobby’s Sunderland Mk.V (SH 72162) appeared late in 2019, so we haven’t had to wait long at all for a re-release. This kit is packed with detail, and has a very busy interior, although you may not want to tackle it unless you are an experienced modeller with a degree of tenacity, because the fit is challenging in places. A lack of locating pins and the presence of many interior bulkheads makes life ‘interesting’.

Due to the fact that the manufacturer has also produced the Mk.I/II and Mk.III (the former very recently), there are generic parts in all three, including the Mk.V. On the outside, the panel lines are generally uniform and interior-wise there’s a pleasing degree of finesse on many smaller components, such as the instrument panel, guns, bomb racks, floor and bulkhead sections. Extensive structural ribbing adorns much of the fuselage halves; the moulding of this is soft in places, but as you can’t really see much of it ultimately, this isn’t too much of an issue.
